Supporting Industry-Academic Collaboration Through Experiential Learning in Industry R&D
Program Overview
The De Luca Foundation (DLF), in partnership with Delsys, Inc. (Natick, MA), is pleased to announce a training initiative for research-minded undergraduate and graduate students. This initiative provides an educational opportunity for Trainees to learn from real-world experiences while performing cutting-edge industry research that directly contributes to the development of next generation sensing solutions for improving human health, communication, and movement.
DLF Trainees will have the opportunity to work in an industrial R&D setting under the mentorship of Research Advisors at Delsys in close collaboration with their academic research advisors. This DLF initiative provides year-round training opportunities through co-ops and fellowships that span 4-, 6-, or 12-month terms with the potential for Trainees to translate their experience into a research capstone, practicum, thesis, or dissertation in collaboration with their academic institution.
Program Benefits
Impactful Work
- Hardware: Exploring novel bio-instrumentation circuits to develop flexible wearable constructs that integrate multi-sensing modalities, which include neural/EMG sensing, inertial sensing, force sensing, and pressure distribution technologies
- Software: Design and implementation of software supporting our core research areas with applications in next-generation neural interface technology, computer vision algorithms for tracking human movement, and the development of augmentative and alternative communication systems
- Algorithms: Develop and evaluate signal processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision-based algorithms to process information from physiological signals for characterizing speech, biomechanics, and control of human movement
Tailored Mentorship
- Delsys Research Advisors work closely with each Trainee and their academic research advisor to create career development plans tailored to their professional and academic goals
- Each Trainee will integrate into a strong, collaborative team of developers, engineers, scientists, and clinicians to gain a unique perspective into industry R&D
Professional Development Opportunities
- Delsys Seminars, from renowned researchers in the fields of biomechanics, computer vision, physiological sensing, and medical devices
- Research lab open houses that provide exposure to a breadth of ongoing research areas
- Presentations for scientific lectures in both industry and academic settings
Financial Support
- $4,000 (USD) per month
- Tuition assistance for thesis-track projects
- Relocation/housing assistance options available

The Training Initiative is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are authorized to work in the United States. Accepted applicants will work at our US headquarters in Natick, Massachusetts.

By supporting your student(s) involvement in the DLF Training Initiative, academic research advisors are provided with a unique opportunity to engage and establish partnerships with our research team as your student(s) cultivates their professional skills by conducting research for developing next generation sensing technologies.
We created the DLF Training Initiative as an all-encompassing program to help both graduate and undergraduate students through co-ops and fellowships to learn more about possible career opportunities, gain experience in an industry R&D setting, and develop professional acumen that may be instrumental to their future success.
