Walter Herzog, Ph.D

Scientific Advisor

Walter Herzog

Prof. Walter Herzog serves as a scientific advisor to DLF staff on motor control and biomechanics initiatives and public outreach.

Prof. Herzog is a senior Professor at the University of Calgary where he directs his research on neuro-biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. Prof. Herzog received a diploma in Physical Education from the Federal Technical Institute of Zurich in 1977 and PhD in Biomechanics at the University of Iowa in 1985.  Prof Herzog began his career at university of Calgary as a postdoctoral fellowship, followed by a faculty position at the Department of Kinesiology. Dr Herzog currently serves as the Director of the Calgary Human Performance Laboratory and a Professor in Kinesiology, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is also the Canada Research Chair, Tier 1 for Cellular and Molecular Biomechanics.

Rebecca Miksad, MD

Scientific Advisor

Rebecca MiksadDr. Rebecca Miksad serves as a scientific advisor to DLF staff on healthcare initiatives and public outreach.

Dr. Miksad,  a senior medical director at Flatiron Health, is a nationally-recognized oncologist and a medical researcher with publications in leading medical & scientific journals.  

Prior to Flatiron Health, Dr. Miksad was an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, a senior scientist at the Institute for Technology Assessment at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the director of gastrointestinal oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).

Dr. Miksad obtained her BA cum laude in economics from Harvard University and an MD with honors in research from Cornell University. She completed her internal medicine residency training at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Hematology/Oncology fellowship at BIDMC. Rebecca earned a MMS from Harvard Medical School and an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health in Clinical Effectiveness. She was a recipient of NCI-funded post-doctoral fellowship in the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Program in Cancer Outcomes Research Training (PCORT).

Paola Contessa Ph.D

Program Director

Paola ContessaDr. Paola Contessa is a passionate advocate of DLF’s scientific mission and is deeply committed to fostering motor control and human movement science research as the program director of DLF initiatives.

Dr. Contessa received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Padova (Italy) and is currently Assistant Director of Research at Delsys/Altec Inc. to advance research in the area of motor control, neurophysiology, and signal processing.

Dr. Contessa has led the growth of the  Motor Control Group (MCG), an arm of ISB that was conceived in 2013 to bridge the fields of Motor Control and Biomechanics. Through MCG,  Dr. Contessa has brought together the voices of leading motor control researchers with their scientific contributions during various scientific meetings. She is well-known amongst her peers for her emphasis on: scientific approach, global outreach, disciplined implementation of MCG, development & management of scholarship initiatives, & building relationships with students and educators.
